Review spare network equipment by use, not just quantity

Check whether spare devices support a defined need and an agreed replacement process.

A shelf of spare equipment can look reassuring without explaining what it is ready to support. An item may need configuration, accessories, entitlement checks, or a technical review before it is useful. A spare-equipment review should connect each item to a practical replacement scenario.

Name the intended use

Identify the installed equipment or role that a spare is intended to support. Ask the technical owner to confirm compatibility and the work required before it could be used. Do not assume interchangeability from a similar appearance or model family.

Record storage location and the person who can release the item. Include any accessories or supporting materials that need to travel with it.

Keep readiness separate from possession

Use a clear status to distinguish an item that has been reviewed from one simply present in storage. Record unresolved questions and the next review owner.

Discuss how the inventory changes after a spare is used. The replacement process should include record updates and a decision about replenishment, so the next incident does not discover that the shelf no longer contains the item everyone expected.

Practical takeaway

Review each important spare against a specific use case, its preparation needs, and the process for keeping the record current.
