Network planning

Include temporary work areas in the office network plan

Bring swing space and temporary desks into planning before a renovation moves people around.

An office renovation can move staff twice: once into temporary space and once into their final location. If the technology plan covers only the finished office, the temporary move can become a rushed project of its own. Include both arrangements in the initial conversation.

Describe how the temporary space will work

List the people, equipment, and applications that will use the space. Confirm which desks are shared, which devices remain in place, and who will support visitors or staff working outside their normal area.

Use a marked layout to identify connection needs and questions for the technical team. A room with enough chairs may still need a different technology arrangement from the one it normally supports.

Plan the return move

Decide which temporary equipment and connections will be retained, relocated, or removed after the renovation. Assign the record updates to someone rather than assuming they will happen during the move.

Give staff separate instructions for the temporary and final arrangements. If an extension, printer, or support contact changes twice, make the dates and responsibilities clear in the approved communication plan.

Practical takeaway

Put temporary space, final space, and the transition between them on the same project schedule.
